The bells of St. Peter's Basilica immediately began to ring, a time-honored tradition marking the success of the conclave in choosing the Supreme Pontiff.

The identity of the new pope and his chosen name are expected to be announced soon from the central balcony of the cathedral, where he will deliver his first address to the crowds gathered in the square.
