April 9, 2026 (PEN) Lebanon announced on Thursday that it had filed an urgent complaint with the UN Security Council against Israel, following the escalation of attacks targeting Lebanese areas, including the capital Beirut, which resulted in a large number of civilian casualties.

The Lebanese government said in a statement that the cabinet decided to go to the Security Council to protest the "expansion of Israeli attacks," considering that this escalation undermines international and regional efforts aimed at stopping the war in the region.

She added that the attacks represent a clear violation of the principles of international law and international humanitarian law, calling on the international community to assume its responsibilities to stop the escalation.

For his part, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called for international pressure to ensure that Lebanon is included in any ceasefire agreement in the region, as a prelude to the start of direct negotiations.

Aoun stressed that his country has the ability and capabilities to negotiate on its own, emphasizing that Lebanon “will not accept anyone negotiating on its behalf.”
