April 12, 2026 (PEN) Nizar Amidi officially assumed his duties as President of the Republic of Iraq, during a presidential ceremony held on Sunday at the Baghdad Palace, according to an announcement by the Presidency of the Republic.

The Iraqi News Agency reported that the ceremony began with the playing of the national anthem, followed by the President's review of the guard of honor, before a meeting with former President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, during which the handover ceremony took place.

Amidi praised his predecessor's efforts during his tenure, appreciating his role in serving the country, and stressing that the peaceful transfer of power is a fundamental pillar for strengthening stability and consolidating the foundations of democracy.

For his part, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid expressed his wishes for the new president to succeed in his duties, in a way that serves the interests of Iraq and meets the aspirations of its people.

Amidi is an Iraqi Kurdish politician and diplomat with more than two decades of governmental and political experience, during which he served as Minister of Environment, Senior Advisor to the President of the Republic on constitutional issues and regional relations, represented Iraq in a number of international forums, and held senior leadership positions in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.
