Trump's statements on Iran are contradictory, ranging from the imminent end of the war to a refusal to extend the truce.

April 15, 2026 (PEN) US President Donald Trump confirmed on Wednesday that he does not intend to extend the ceasefire with Iran, despite asserting that the war is “very close to its end,” at a time when expectations are growing for decisive developments in the next few days.

In an interview with ABC News, Trump said he “does not believe an extension of the truce will be necessary,” referring to the two-week ceasefire brokered in Islamabad between Iran, the United States, and Israel.

He added that "the next two days will be eventful," without revealing further details.

At the same time, Trump indicated that reaching an agreement with Iran remains the best option, believing that it would enable Iran to "rebuild its country," but he did not rule out that the crisis could end through another path, in reference to the possibility of renewed escalation.

These statements come after the first round of direct talks between Washington and Tehran, held in Islamabad last week, which failed to produce tangible progress on a number of key issues, most notably uranium enrichment, Iran’s missile program and support for allied groups in the region.

Officials from both sides confirmed that no official date has yet been set for a second round of negotiations, despite previous talk of the possibility of holding them soon.

According to American sources, the US delegation in the next round may be headed by Vice President JD Vance, with the participation of Special Envoy Steve Wittkopf and Advisor Jared Kushner, who also participated in the first round.

In a related context, Trump renewed his criticism of NATO, saying that it “has not supported the United States and will not do so in the future,” and he also considered that “the regime in Iran has become different” after what he described as the removal of hardliners.

These statements refer to what he said earlier, that the war is “very close to ending,” reflecting a contradiction between optimism about an imminent solution and the threat of ending the truce, which leaves the door open to two main possibilities in the near future: either reaching a quick agreement, or a return to military escalation.
