The Qatari national team managed to force a draw against Switzerland with a score of one goal each, and Qatari star Boualem Khoukhi secured a distinguished place in the history of the World Cup competitions, after saving Al-Annabi from defeat against Switzerland in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup, which kicked off in the United States, Mexico and Canada last Thursday.

Qatar almost lost points in the match after Breel Embolo gave Switzerland a dubious lead from a penalty kick in the 17th minute, before Khoukhi snatched an equalizer for Al-Annabi in the 94th minute.

Khoukhi’s goal became historic on all levels, as it was only the second goal for Qatar in the history of its participation in the World Cup, after Mohammed Muntari scored the first goal against Senegal in the 2022 edition.

This goal also gave Qatar its first point in its World Cup history, after its first participation on its own soil four years ago ended with three defeats against the Netherlands, Senegal and Ecuador.

The most notable figure was reported in the statistics of "Mr. Chip" via the X platform, where it was confirmed that "Boualem Khoukhi's goal for Qatar in the 93:58 minute is the third late goal (after the end of regular time) scored in a World Cup match (excluding extra time) that prevented his country's team from being defeated."

He emphasized that Khoukhi's goal surpasses both: "Portugal's Silvestre Varela's goal in the 2-2 draw with the United States when he scored in the 94th minute and 34 seconds in the 2014 World Cup, and Mexico's Luis Hernandez's goal against the Netherlands (2-2) in the 94th minute and 3 seconds in the 1998 World Cup."

Switzerland took the lead with the first goal on Saturday evening, before Qatar equalized on Sunday morning.
