February 2, 2026 (PEN) Egypt assumed the presidency of the African Union's Peace and Security Council for a month on Sunday, at a time when the continent is facing increasing security challenges.

Egypt’s official Channel One quoted the Foreign Ministry as saying that Cairo will begin its presidential term in the council starting from February 1st.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Saturday confirming that Egypt would assume the presidency of the council starting from the beginning of February, succeeding the Democratic Republic of Congo, which had taken over the task in January.

The ministry indicated that the priorities of the Egyptian presidency will focus on current conflict issues in the African continent.

The Foreign Ministry added that the Egyptian presidency of the Council is scheduled to witness intensive activities addressing developments in Sudan and Somalia, where informal consultations will be held at the ministerial level with the Sudanese Foreign Minister, followed by two ministerial sessions to discuss developments in Sudan and Somalia.
