Teachers in Kassala reject the decision to reopen schools and insist on implementing their demands.

July 16, 2026 (PEN) The Higher Escalation Committee of the Sudanese Teachers Committee in Kassala State rejected the outcomes of the government meeting held yesterday, in which it was announced that schools would reopen starting Sunday, July 19, 2026, considering the decision an attempt to circumvent the teachers’ demands through “fabricated fronts” that do not represent them.

The committee said in a statement on Thursday that the meeting went beyond the core of the crisis and marginalized the true representatives of the teachers, stressing that the issue is not about opening schools, but rather a "fair and legitimate rights issue" that teachers have been demanding through peaceful means.

She stressed that linking the resumption of work to the fulfillment of rights is a "firm principle" and not a negotiating position, adding: "Whoever wants to open the schools should start first by doing justice to the teachers and restoring their rights in full and without any reduction."

The committee warned that insisting on bypassing teachers’ representatives and imposing solutions through unauthorized entities “aims to undermine teachers’ rights and break their will,” and reinforces fears of a trend to empty government education of its content and gradually get rid of its burdens.

She affirmed that she would remain committed to the right of the Sudanese child to a stable and good education, and would uphold the rights of teachers as an entry point to the stability of the educational process, stressing that she would not accept any attempt to impose a resumption of work without implementing the demands.
