May 31, 2026 (PEN) Egyptian Foreign Minister, Immigration and Expatriate Affairs Minister Badr Abdel-Aty discussed with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, the latest developments in the negotiations between the United States and Iran, and regional developments, during a telephone call.

Abdel-Aati stressed the need to intensify diplomatic efforts and support reaching consensus understandings between Washington and Tehran, which would contribute to reducing escalation and enhancing regional and international security and stability, according to a statement by the official spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Tamim Khallaf.

During the call, Abdel-Aati expressed his disappointment that the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, held in New York from April 27 to May 22, failed to reach a consensus on a final document.

He affirmed the continued validity of the outcomes of previous conferences, most notably the 1995 resolution on the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East.

Abdel-Aati stressed the pivotal importance of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, as the cornerstone of the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime, and its role in promoting international peace and security, stressing the need to achieve universality of the treaty, especially in the Middle East region.
