Washington announces the failure of Islamabad negotiations and confirms the absence of Iranian commitments.

J.D. Vance, US Vice President (Al-Ghad News)

April 12, 2026 (PEN) U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said that intensive rounds of negotiations with the Iranian delegation in Islamabad, which lasted about 21 hours, did not lead to an agreement, noting what he described as "clear shortcomings" in the course of the talks.

Vance said in a press statement from Islamabad that the Iranian side did not accept the conditions put forward by the United States, stressing that Washington requires it to obtain a "clear and unequivocal confirmation" that Iran is not seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, as a prerequisite for any future understanding.

He added that the United States had presented what he described as "the final and best offer," expressing his hope that the Iranian side would decide to deal with it.

Vance confirmed that the negotiations did not result in an agreement, saying that the American delegation would return to Washington without reaching an understanding with the Iranian side, noting the lack of positive commitments regarding the nuclear file.

He explained that the negotiating efforts were conducted in good faith and on the full side of the United States, but they did not achieve tangible progress, noting that the Iranian nuclear facilities were destroyed, while Tehran did not pledge to stop its nuclear program.

Vance also praised Pakistan's efforts during the talks, describing them as "remarkable" in trying to bring the views of the parties involved closer together.

High-level peace talks between the United States and Iran began yesterday in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, with the participation of official delegations from both sides, as part of diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tension and discussing contentious issues, primarily the Iranian nuclear program and regional security issues.

Following a first round of talks that lasted 15 hours amid disagreements over a number of issues, reports indicated that the two sides would hold talks later in the day before the US Vice President announced the failure to reach an agreement with Iran.

These talks come after the United States and Iran announced an agreement to cease hostilities in the Middle East war that has been raging since February 28, in a move aimed at calming tensions in the region and ensuring the stability of energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.

A high-level US delegation, headed by US Vice President Jay D. Vance, along with US Special Envoy Steve Wittkopf and Jared Kushner, arrived in Islamabad to participate in the talks, while the Iranian delegation, headed by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, along with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, arrived last night.
