The United Nations has warned of a human rights catastrophe in the city of El Obeid, where some 500,000 civilians face the risk of mass atrocities amid attacks by marches, a siege and a severe shortage of services.

The Red Cross and the Sudanese Red Crescent have stepped up their aid efforts in El Obeid and North Kordofan, providing food to tens of thousands and health and water support to displaced people as fighting escalates.

Emergency lawyers condemned the targeting of the power station in Al-Abyad, warning of an imminent danger to civilians as attacks by marches and military mobilization around the city escalate.

The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect warned of escalating attacks by armed groups in El Obeid, confirming that at least 30 people had been killed and calling for the protection of civilians and an end to the targeting of civilian infrastructure.

The group demanded an immediate halt to indiscriminate air attacks and the opening of independent and transparent investigations.
