António Guterres stresses that military governments are not the solution and urges the strengthening of democratic institutions

August 31, 2023 (pen) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that military governments are not the solution to challenges, but rather exacerbate problems and crises.

This came in a press statement by the Secretary-General, commenting on "the succession of military coups in recent months, especially in the African continent."

"Many countries face profound governance challenges, but military governments are not the solution," Guterres said.

He urged all countries to move urgently to establish credible democratic institutions and enforce the rule of law.
