Ethiopia announces the completion of filling the reservoir of the disputed dam project

September 11, 2023 (Reuters) - Ethiopia said on Sunday it had completed the fourth and final phase of filling a reservoir for its planned mega hydroelectric power plant on the Blue Nile, a project long opposed by Egypt and Sudan.

Construction of the $4 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) began in 2011 and Ethiopia sees the project as necessary to boost its economic development.

However, Egypt and Sudan see the project as a serious threat to vital water supplies.
