February 2, 2026 (PEN) Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that the failure of the diplomatic track could lead to a wider confrontation, warning that "war would be a disaster for everyone, and American bases throughout the region would be targets for the Iranian army."

In an interview with CNN, Araqchi explained that what worries Tehran at the present stage is "miscalculations," considering that US President Donald Trump is "wise enough to make the right decision."

Araghchi acknowledged that Iran "has lost confidence in the United States as a party to the negotiations," noting that there are mediators from "friendly countries in the region" working to rebuild trust, which opens the door to the possibility of further talks.

In response to a question about Iran's missile arsenal and Tehran's proxies in the region, he stressed that "the focus should be on Iran's nuclear capabilities," calling for the negotiating process not to be distracted by issues he described as being outside the core of the negotiations.

He added: "Let's not talk about impossible things, and let's not miss the opportunity to reach a fair and equitable agreement that ensures Iran does not possess nuclear weapons. This is achievable, even within a short period."

He stressed that Tehran expects in return "the lifting of US sanctions and respect for Iran's right to continue uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes," in accordance with international agreements.

In a warning tone, Araqchi said that the failure of the talks would make Iran "ready for war," suggesting that "the conflict would escalate beyond Iran," adding: "War would be a disaster for everyone, and American bases throughout the region would be targets for the Iranian army."
